✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ went out for some need toward the well of Jamal, then he came back. A man from his companions met him and greeted him, but the Messenger of God ﷺ did not return the greeting until he placed his hands on the wall, then wiped his face and hands, then said: "And peace be upon you."

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationOf the narrations that describe the manner of tayammum, none is authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) except the hadith of Abū Juhaym and that of ʿAmmār. Everything other than these two is either weak (ḍaʿīf) or disputed as to whether it is raised (marfūʿ) or stopped (mawqūf), and the preponderant view is that it is not raised.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 24347
  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationWhat is established in the hadith of Abū Juhaym is the wording "his hands", not "his forearms", for the latter is an anomalous (shādhdh) narration.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 24347
  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationOf the hadiths reported on the manner of tayammum, none is authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) except the hadith of Abū Juhaym.
