✧ O Messenger of Allah, what do you think if I meet a man from the disbelievers and he fights me, and we exchange two blows, and he strikes one of my hands with the sword and cuts it off, then he takes refuge from me by a tree and says, ‘I have submitted to Allah’? Should I fight him, O Messenger of Allah, after he has said it? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Do not kill him.” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, he cut off one of my hands, then said that after cutting it. Should I fight him?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Do not kill him. If you kill him, then he is in the position you were in before you killed him, and you are in his position before he said his word which he said.”

Rāshid, ʿUqayl b. Khālid, ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. Jaʿfar, Usāmah b. Zayd and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Isḥāq narrated it from al-Zuhrī, from ʿAṭāʾ b. Yazīd, from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAdī b. al-Khiyār, from al-Miqdād b. al-Aswad. Al-Awzāʿī narrated it from Ibrāhīm b. Murrah, from al-Zuhrī, and there is disagreement about him as well. Murrah, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAdī b. al-Khiyār, from al-Miqdād; they did not mention ʿAṭāʾ b. Yazīd in it. There is disagreement about al-Walīd b. Muslim: Abū al-Walīd al-Qurashī narrated it from al-Walīd, from al-Awzāʿī and al-Layth b. Saʿd, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAdī, from al-Miqdād; he did not mention ʿAṭāʾ b. Murrah in it, and put Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān in the place of ʿAṭāʾ b. Yazīd. Al-Firyābī narrated it from al-Awzāʿī, from Ibrāhīm b. Murrah, from al-Zuhrī, as a mursal report from al-Miqdād. The correct one is the version of Ṣāliḥ b. Kaysān and those who followed him.
