✧ When Abu al-Haysar Anas b. Rafi' came to Makkah with some youths from Banu 'Abd al-Ashhal, among them Iyas b. Mu'adh, seeking an alliance from Quraysh against their people, the Khazraj, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard of them and came to them and sat with them. He said to them: 'Would you like something better than what you came for?' They said: 'And what is that?' He said: 'I am the Messenger of Allah. He sent me to the servants to call them to worship Allah without associating anything with Him, and a Book has been sent down to me.' Then he mentioned Islam and recited the Qur'an to them. Iyas b. Mu'adh, who was a young boy, said: 'O my people, this, by Allah, is better than what you came for.' He said: Abu al-Haysar Anas b. Rafi' took a handful of pebbles and threw it in the face of Iyas b. Mu'adh. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up and left them, and they returned to Madinah. Then the battle of Bu'ath took place between the Aws and the Khazraj. He said: Then Iyas b. Mu'adh did not remain long before he died. Mahmud b. Labid said: One of my people who was present at his death told me that they kept hearing him declaring the oneness of Allah, magnifying Him, praising Him, and glorifying Him until he died, and they had no doubt that he had died a Muslim. He had indeed taken Islam into his heart in that gathering when he heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ what he heard.
