حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى قَالَ
اسْتَسْقَى حُذَيْفَةُ مِنْ دِهْقَانٍ أَوْ عِلْجٍ فَأَتَاهُ بِإِنَاءٍ فِضَّةٍ فَحَذَفَهُ بِهِ ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى الْقَوْمِ فَاعْتَذَرَ وَقَالَ إِنِّي إِنَّمَا فَعَلْتُ بِهِ هَذَا لِأَنِّي كُنْتُ نَهَيْتُهُ قَبْلَ هَذِهِ الْمَرَّةِ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ نَهَانَا عَنْ لُبْسِ الدِّيبَاجِ وَالْحَرِيرِ وَآنِيَةِ الذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةِ وَقَالَ هُوَ لَهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَهُوَ لَنَا فِي الْآخِرَةِ

✧ Ḥudhayfah asked a landowner or a non-Arab for water. He brought him a silver vessel, so he threw it at him. Then he turned to the people and apologized, saying, “I only did this to him because I had forbidden him before this time. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from wearing silk brocade and silk, and from vessels of gold and silver. He said, ‘They are for them in this world and for us in the Hereafter.’”
