✧ Hudhayfah b. al-Yaman about the Prophet ﷺ

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ عَنْ ابْنِ عَوْنٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ قَالَ

جُنْدُبٌ لَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ الْجَرَعَةِ وَثَمَّ رَجُلٌ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ وَاللهِ لَيُهْرَاقَنَّ الْيَوْمَ دِمَاءٌ؟ قَالَ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ كَلَّا وَاللهِ قَالَ قُلْتَ بَلَى وَاللهِ قَالَ كَلَّا وَاللهِ قَالَ قُلْتَ بَلَى وَاللهِ قَالَ كَلَّا وَاللهِ إِنَّهُ لَحَدِيثُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ حَدَّثَنِيهِ قَالَ قُلْتُ وَاللهِ إِنِّي لَأُرَاكَ جَلِيسَ سَوْءٍ مُنْذُ الْيَوْمِ تَسْمَعُنِي أَحْلِفُ وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ لَا تَنْهَانِي؟ قَالَ ثُمَّ قُلْتُ مَالِي وَلِلْغَضَبِ قَالَ فَتَرَكْتُ الْغَضَبَ وَأَقْبَلْتُ أَسْأَلُهُ قَالَ وَإِذَا الرَّجُلُ حُذَيْفَةُ

Translation

✧ Jundub said: When it was the day of al-Jar'ah and there was a man there, I said: 'By Allah, will blood be shed today?' Then the man said: 'No, by Allah.' He said: 'You said: Yes, by Allah.' He said: 'No, by Allah.' He said: 'You said: Yes, by Allah.' He said: 'No, by Allah. It is indeed a hadith of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; he narrated it to me.' I said: 'By Allah, I consider you a bad companion since today. You hear me taking an oath, and you yourself heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, yet you do not forbid me?' Then I said: 'What is it with me and anger?' So I left off anger and began to ask him. And behold, the man was Hudhayfah.
