✧ Hudhayfah b. al-Yaman about the Prophet ﷺ

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ عَنِ ابْنِ عَوْنٍ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عَوْنٍ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى قَالَ

خَرَجْتُ مَعَ حُذَيْفَةَ إِلَى بَعْضِ هَذَا السَّوَادِ فَاسْتَسْقَى فَأَتَاهُ دِهْقَانٌ بِإِنَاءٍ مِنْ فِضَّةٍ قَالَ فَرَمَاهُ بِهِ فِي وَجْهِهِ قَالَ قُلْنَا اسْكُتُوا اسْكُتُوا وَإِنَّا إِنْ سَأَلْنَاهُ لَمْ يُحَدِّثْنَا قَالَ فَسَكَتْنَا قَالَ فَلَمَّا كَانَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ قَالَ أَتَدْرُونَ لِمَ رَمَيْتُ بِهِ فِي وَجْهِهِ؟ قَالَ قُلْنَا لَا قَالَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ نَهَيْتُهُ قَالَ فَذَكَرَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ لَا تَشْرَبُوا فِي آنِيَةِ الذَّهَبِ قَالَ مُعَاذٌ لَا تَشْرَبُوا فِي الذَّهَبِ وَلَا فِي الْفِضَّةِ وَلَا تَلْبَسُوا الْحَرِيرَ وَلَا الدِّيبَاجَ فَإِنَّهَا لَهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَلَكُمْ فِي الْآخِرَةِ

✧ I went out with Hudhayfah to some of this cultivated land. He asked for water, and a village chief brought him a vessel of silver. He threw it in his face. We said, 'Be quiet, be quiet—if we ask him, he will not narrate to us.' So we kept quiet. Later he said, 'Do you know why I threw it in his face?' We said, 'No.' He said, 'I had forbidden him.' Then he mentioned the Prophet ﷺ saying, 'Do not drink from vessels of gold'—Mu'adh said, 'Do not drink from gold or silver, and do not wear silk or brocade, for they are for them in this world and for you in the Hereafter.'
