✧ I came to al-Yashkuri in a group from Banu Layth. He said: He asked, 'Who are the people?' We said, 'Banu Layth.' He said: We asked him and he asked us, then we said, 'We have come to ask you about the hadith of Hudhayfah.' He said: We returned with Abu Musa as travelers, and the riding animals became expensive in Kufah. So I and a companion of mine sought permission from Abu Musa, and he permitted us. We arrived in Kufah early in the day. I said to my companion, 'I am entering the mosque, and when the market opens I will come out to you.' He said: I entered the mosque and found a circle of people, as if their heads had been cut off, listening to the speech of a man. I stood over them. A man came and stood beside me. I said, 'Who is this?' He said, 'Are you from Basrah?' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'I knew it. If you were from Kufah you would not ask about this. This is Hudhayfah b. al-Yaman.' He said: So I drew near to him and heard him say: The people used to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about good, but I used to ask him about evil, knowing that good would not overtake me. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, after this good will there be evil?' He said, 'O Hudhayfah, learn the Book of Allah and follow what is in it' — three times. He said: I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, after this good will there be evil?' He said, 'A tribulation and evil.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, after this evil will there be good?' He said, 'O Hudhayfah, learn the Book of Allah and follow what is in it' — three times. He said: I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, after this evil will there be good?' He said, 'A truce upon corruption, and a community upon grudges.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what is a truce upon corruption?' He said, 'The hearts of some people will not return to what they were upon.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, after this good will there be evil?' He said, 'O Hudhayfah, learn the Book of Allah and follow what is in it' — three times. He said: I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, after this good will there be evil?' He said, 'A blind and deaf tribulation, with callers at the gates of the Fire. If you die, O Hudhayfah, while biting onto a tree stump, that is better for you than following any one of them.'
