✧ We were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ, and he said, 'I do not know how long I will remain among you, so follow the two after me' — and he pointed to Abū Bakr and ʿUmar — 'and hold fast to the covenant of ʿAmmār. And whatever Ibn Masʿūd tells you, believe him.'

machine translationI asked my father about a hadith narrated by al-Thawrī from ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmayr, from Hilāl, the freed slave of Ribʿī, from Ribʿī, from Ḥudhayfah, raised to the Prophet (marfūʿ): "Follow the two who come after me." Zāʾidah and others narrated it from ʿAbd al-Malik, from Ribʿī, from Ḥudhayfah, raised to the Prophet (marfūʿ). Which of the two is more authentic (aṣaḥḥ)? He said: What al-Thawrī said, for he added a man and transmitted the hadith well.
in مسند أحمد, p. 23691 - Ibn Ḥazm
machine translationIt is not authentic (ṣaḥīḥ), because it is from ʿAbd al-Malik, from the freedman (mawlā) of Ribʿī, who is unknown (majhūl), from Ribʿī.
