✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ sent two expeditions to Yemen—over one of them was ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, and over the other Khālid b. al-Walīd. He said: If you meet, then ʿAlī is over the people; and if you separate, then each of you is over his own detachment. He said: We encountered Banū Zayd of the people of Yemen, and we fought. The Muslims prevailed over the polytheists. We killed the fighters and took the offspring captive. ʿAlī chose a woman from the captives for himself. Buraydah said: Khālid b. al-Walīd wrote with me to the Messenger of God ﷺ informing him of that. When I came to the Prophet ﷺ, I handed over the letter, and it was read to him. I saw anger in the face of the Messenger of God ﷺ, so I said: O Messenger of God, this is the place for one seeking refuge. You sent me with a man and commanded me to obey him, and I did what I was sent with. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: Do not fall upon ʿAlī, for he is from me and I am from him, and he is your guardian after me. And he is from me and I am from him, and he is your guardian after me.
