✧ We laid siege to Khaybar. Abu Bakr took the banner but returned without victory. Then Umar took it the next day and went out, then returned without victory. The people that day suffered hardship and exhaustion. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, "Tomorrow I will give the banner to a man whom God and His Messenger love and who loves God and His Messenger; he will not return until it is conquered for him." We spent the night pleased, believing that victory would come the next day. When morning came, the Messenger of God ﷺ prayed the dawn prayer, then stood up and called for the banner while the people were in their ranks. He called Ali, who had sore eyes, spat into his eyes, handed him the banner, and victory was granted through him. Buraydah said, "I was among those who stretched their necks for it."
