✧ We went out with the Prophet ﷺ and I witnessed Badr with him. The people met, and Allah [Blessed and Exalted] defeated the enemy. One group went off in pursuit of them, routing and killing them. Another group fell upon the camp to collect and gather the spoils. Another group surrounded the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so that the enemy could not catch him off guard. When night came and the people returned to one another, those who had gathered the spoils said: We collected and gathered them, so no one else has a share in them. Those who had gone in pursuit of the enemy said: You are no more entitled to them than we are; we drove the enemy away from them and routed them. Those who had surrounded the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: You are no more entitled to them than we are; we surrounded the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and feared that the enemy might catch him off guard, and we were occupied with him. Then it was revealed: They ask you about the anfāl. Say: The anfāl belong to Allah and the Messenger. So fear Allah and set things right between you [Qurʾan 8:1]. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ divided it equally among the Muslims. He said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raided in enemy territory, he gave a quarter of the spoils as nafal, and when he returned and the people were weary, he gave a third. He disliked the anfāl and said: Let the strong believer give back to the weak among them.
