✧ When the verse of debt was revealed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘The first to deny was Adam ﷺ — or the first to deny was Adam — Indeed, when Allah, Mighty and Majestic, created Adam, He wiped his back and brought forth from it what is [of the descendants] until the Day of Resurrection, and He presented his offspring to him. He saw among them a man shining. He said: “My Lord, who is this?” He said: “This is your son Dawud.” He said: “My Lord, how long is his lifespan?” He said: “Sixty years.” He said: “My Lord, increase his lifespan!” He said: “No, except if I increase it from your lifespan.” Adam’s lifespan was one thousand years, so He increased it by forty years. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, wrote that for him in a book, and made the angels witnesses. When Adam was dying and the angels came to take his soul, he said: “There remain of my lifespan forty years!” It was said: “You have given them to your son Dawud!” He said: “I did not do that!” Allah, Mighty and Majestic, brought out the book and the angels testified against him.’
