✧ My father, Qatadah al-Ansari

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ قَالَ

كُنْتُ أَرَى الرُّؤْيَا، أُعْرَى مِنْهَا، غَيْرَ أَنِّي لَا أُزَمَّلُ حَتَّى لَقِيتُ أَبَا قَتَادَةَ، فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ، فَحَدَّثَنِي عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، قَالَ: الرُّؤْيَا مِنَ اللهِ، وَالْحُلُمُ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ، فَمَنْ رَأَى رُؤْيَا يَكْرَهُهَا فَلَا يُخْبِرْ بِهَا، وَلْيَتْفُلْ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ ثَلَاثًا، وَلْيَسْتَعِذْ بِاللهِ مِنْ شَرِّهَا؛ فَإِنَّهَا لَا تَضُرُّهُ

Translation

✧ I used to see dreams that would make me ill, except that I would not be wrapped up, until I met Abu Qatadah and mentioned that to him. He narrated to me from the Messenger of God ﷺ, who said: “The dream is from God, and the evil dream is from Satan. Whoever sees a dream he dislikes should not tell anyone about it, and should spit to his left three times, and seek refuge in God from its evil; then it will not harm him.”
