✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ prepared a military expedition, so I went to him and said: O Messenger of God, pray to God for me for martyrdom. He said: O God, grant them safety and spoils. So we went on the expedition, and we were safe and gained spoils. Then he prepared another expedition, and I went to him and said: O Messenger of God, pray to God for me for martyrdom. He said: O God, grant them safety and spoils. So we went on the expedition, and we were safe and gained spoils. Then he prepared another expedition, and I went to him and said: O Messenger of God, I have come to you three times in succession asking you to pray to God for me for martyrdom, and you said: O God, grant them safety and spoils. So we went on the expedition, and we were safe and gained spoils. So command me, O Messenger of God, with something through which God may benefit me. He said: You must observe fasting, for there is nothing like it. He said: Abu Umamah's household was hardly ever seen to have smoke during the day; if smoke was seen during the day, they knew that a guest had come to them, because he and his family used to fast. He said: Then I went to the Prophet ﷺ and said: O Messenger of God, you commanded me with something by which I hope God has benefited me, so command me with something else. He said: Know that you do not prostrate to God a single prostration except that God raises you a degree by it and removes from you a sin by it.
