✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ initiated a military expedition. I came to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, supplicate Allah for martyrdom for me." He said: "O Allah, keep them safe and grant them spoils." He said: So we were kept safe and granted spoils. He said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ initiated a second expedition. I came to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, supplicate Allah for martyrdom for me." He said: "O Allah, keep them safe and grant them spoils." He said: So we were kept safe and granted spoils. He said: Then he initiated a third expedition. I came to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I came to you twice before this time, asking you to supplicate Allah for martyrdom for me, and you supplicated Allah, Mighty and Majestic, to keep us safe and grant us spoils, and we were kept safe and granted spoils. O Messenger of Allah, supplicate Allah for martyrdom for me." He said: "O Allah, keep them safe and grant them spoils." He said: So we were kept safe and granted spoils. Then I came to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, command me to do a deed." He said: "You should fast, for there is nothing like it." He said: Abu Umamah, his wife, and his servant were never seen except fasting. He said: When smoke was seen in their house during the day, it was said: "A guest has come to them." He said: I remained so for as long as Allah willed. Then I came to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, you commanded us to fast, and I hope Allah has blessed us in it. O Messenger of Allah, command me to do another deed." He said: "Know that you will never prostrate to Allah a prostration except that Allah raises you a degree by it and removes from you a sin by it."
