✧ The plague struck Syria. Amr b. al-As said: "This punishment has come, so flee from it into the mountain passes and valleys." This reached Mu'adh, and he did not believe what he said. He said: "Rather, it is martyrdom, mercy, and the supplication of your Prophet ﷺ. O Allah, give Mu'adh and his family their share of Your mercy." Abu Qilabah said: I knew martyrdom and knew mercy, but did not know what the supplication of your Prophet was, until I was informed that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was praying one night and said in his supplication: "Fever then, or plague," three times. When morning came, someone from his family said to him: "O Messenger of Allah, I heard you last night making a supplication!" He said: "Did you hear it?" He said: "Yes." He said: "I asked my Lord, Mighty and Majestic, not to destroy my community with a drought, and He granted me that. I asked Him not to set upon them an enemy from other than them who would make their lives permissible, and He granted me that. I asked Him not to make them into factions and make them taste each other's affliction, and He refused me—or he said: He withheld it from me. So I said: Fever then, or plague; fever then, or plague; fever then, or plague, three times."
