✧ I entered the congregational mosque in Basra and sat near an old man with white head and beard. He said: Muadh b. Jabal narrated to me from the Messenger of God ﷺ that he said: There is no soul that dies while it testifies that there is no god but God and that I am the Messenger of God, with that returning to a certain heart, but God forgives it. I said to him: Did you hear it from Muadh? It was as if the people rebuked me. He said: Do not rebuke him or reproach him; leave him. Yes, I heard that from Muadh, who was reporting it from the Messenger of God ﷺ. And Ismail once said: narrating it from the Messenger of God ﷺ. [I heard that from Muadh, reporting it from the Messenger of God ﷺ.] He said: I said to one of them: Who is this? He said: This is Abd al-Rahman b. Samura.
