✧ We departed from our people, Ghifar, who used to make lawful the sacred month: I, my brother Unays, and our mother. We set out until we stopped at a maternal uncle of ours who had wealth and good standing. Our uncle honored us and was good to us, but his people envied us. They said to him: When you are away from your family, Unays replaces you with them. Our uncle came and recounted to him what had been said. I said: As for the past of your kindness, you have muddied it, and there is no gathering for us after this. He said: So we gathered our small herd and loaded upon it, and our uncle covered himself with his garment and began to weep. He said: We departed until we stopped near Makkah. He said: Unays vied with a man for our herd and the like of it. They went to a soothsayer, who chose Unays, and he brought us our herd and its like. I had prayed, O son of my brother, for three years before I met the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said: I asked: To whom? He said: To God. He said: I said: In which direction do you face? He said: Wherever God [Mighty and Majestic] directs me. He said: I would pray the evening prayer until, when it was the end of the night, I would drop as if I were a cover. [My father said:] Abu al-Nadr said: Sulayman said: as if I were a cover, meaning a tent, until the sun rose over me. He said: Unays said: I have a need in Makkah, so suffice me until I come to you. He said: He departed and was delayed from me, then came to me. I said: What kept you? He said: I met a man who claims that God [Mighty and Majestic] sent him upon your religion. He said: I said: What do people say to him? He said: They say he is a poet, a sorcerer, and a soothsayer. He said: Unays was a poet. He said: I have heard the speech of soothsayers, and what he says is not like their speech. I placed his words against the modes of poetry, and by God, it does not fit on anyone's tongue that it is poetry. By God, he is truthful and they are liars. He said: I said to him: Will you suffice me so I can go and look? He said: Yes. Be on guard against the people of Makkah, for they have become hostile to him and shown grim faces to him. Affan said: they have abhorred him. Bahz said: they have preceded against him. Abu al-Nadr said: they have attacked him. He said: I departed until I came to Makkah, and I deemed one of them weak. I said: Where is this man whom you call the Sabian? He said: He pointed to me and said: The Sabian. He said: The people of the valley leaned upon me with every clod and bone until I fell unconscious. When I rose, I was like a red statue. I came to Zamzam, drank from its water, and washed the blood from myself. I entered between the Kaaba and its curtains and stayed there, O son of my brother, for thirty days and nights, having no food except Zamzam water. I grew fat until the folds of my belly broke apart, and I felt no pang of hunger on my liver. He said: While the people of Makkah were in a moonlit, clear night—Affan said: clear; Bahz said: bright; likewise Abu al-Nadr said—God struck upon the ear canals of the people of Makkah, so none circumambulated the House except two women. They came upon me while calling upon Isaf and Na'ilah. He said: I said: Marry one of them to the other. That did not deter them. He said: They came upon me and I said: A peg like a piece of wood, though I did not use a nickname. He said: The two women went away wailing and saying: If only someone from our group were here. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ and Abu Bakr met them as they were descending from the mountain. He said: What is the matter with you two? They said: The Sabian is between the Kaaba and its curtains. He said: What did he say to you? They said: He said a word to us that fills the mouth. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ and his companion came until he touched the Black Stone, circumambulated the House, then prayed. He said: I came to him and was the first to greet him with the greeting of the people of Islam. He said: And upon you and the mercy of God. From what people are you? He said: I said: From Ghifar. He said: He leaned with his hand and placed it on his forehead. He said: I said to myself: He disliked that I attributed myself to Ghifar. He said: I wanted to take his hand, but his companion prevented me, and he was more knowledgeable about him than I. He said: How long have you been here? I said: I have been here for thirty days and nights. He said: Who has been feeding you? I said: I had no food except Zamzam water; I grew fat until the folds of my belly broke, and I felt no pang of hunger on my liver. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: It is blessed, and it is food that nourishes. Abu Bakr said: Permit me, O Messenger of God, to feed him tonight. He said: He did so. He said: The Prophet ﷺ departed, Abu Bakr departed, and I departed with them until Abu Bakr opened a door and began to take for us from the raisins of Ta'if. He said: That was the first food I ate there. I stayed for a while. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: I have been directed to a land of palm trees, and I think it is only Yathrib. Will you convey from me to your people, that God [Mighty and Majestic] may benefit them through you and reward you among them? He said: I departed until I came to my brother Unays. He said: He said to me: What have you done? I said: I have done that I submitted and believed. He said: He said: I have no desire to turn away from your religion, for I have submitted and believed. Then we came to our mother, and she said: I have no desire to turn away from your religion, for I have submitted and believed. We loaded up and came to our people, Ghifar, and some of them submitted before the Messenger of God ﷺ arrived in Madinah. He said: meaning Yazid in Baghdad. Some said: when he arrived. Bahz said: our brothers, we submit. Likewise Abu al-Nadr said. Khufaf b. Iyma' b. Rahadah al-Ghifari led them in prayer, and he was their chief that day. The rest of them said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ arrives, we will submit. The Messenger of God ﷺ came to Madinah, and the rest submitted. He said: Aslam came and said: O Messenger of God, our brothers; we submit upon that which they submitted. So they submitted. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: Ghifar, may God forgive it, and Aslam, may God keep it safe. Bahz said: Iyma' b. Rahadah led them in prayer, and Abu al-Nadr said: Iyma'.
