✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ sent me as a zakat collector to Baliyy, ʿUdhrah, and all of Banū Saʿd b. Hudhaym b. Quḍāʿah.—[My father] said: And Yaʿqūb said in another place: “of Quḍāʿah.”—He said: I collected zakat from them until I came to the last man among them. His dwelling and land were among the closest of their dwellings to the Messenger of God ﷺ in Madinah. He said: When he gathered his wealth for me, I found upon it only a bint makhāḍ (a one-year-old female camel)—that is, I informed him that it was due as zakat. He said: The man said: “That is one with no milk and no riding capability. By God, neither the Messenger of God ﷺ nor any messenger of his has ever stood over my wealth before you. I would not lend God [Blessed and Exalted] from my wealth what has no milk and no riding capability. But here is a young, fat she-camel—take it.” He said: I said to him: “I will not take what I was not commanded to take. The Messenger of God ﷺ is near you. If you wish, go to him and present what you presented to me. If he accepts it from you, it is accepted, and if he returns it to you, it is returned.” He said: “Indeed, I will do that.” He said: He set out with me, bringing the she-camel he had offered me, until we came to the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said: He said to him: “O Prophet of God, your messenger came to me to take the zakat of my wealth. By God, neither the Messenger of God ﷺ nor any messenger of his has ever stood over my wealth before him. I gathered my wealth for him, and he claimed that I owe a bint makhāḍ, which is one with no milk and no riding capability. I offered him a young, fat she-camel to take, but he refused me that.” Then he said: “Here it is—I have brought it to you, O Messenger of God; take it.” He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: “That is what is due upon you. But if you voluntarily give something better, we accept it from you, and God will reward you for it.” He said: “Here it is, O Messenger of God; I have brought it to you—take it.” He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ ordered that it be taken, and he supplicated for blessing in his wealth.
