✧ While we were in rows behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the ẓuhr or ʿaṣr prayer, we saw him reaching for something in front of him while in prayer to take it, then he reached for it again to take it, then he was prevented from it. Then he stepped back and we stepped back, then he stepped back a second time and we stepped back. When he said the salām, Ubayy b. Kaʿb said, “O Messenger of Allah, we saw you today doing something in your prayer that you had not been doing.” He said, “Paradise with its splendor was presented to me, and I reached for a bunch of its grapes to bring to you. Had I taken it, all who are between heaven and earth would have eaten from it without diminishing it. But I was prevented from it. And the Fire was presented to me; when I felt the heat of its blaze, I stepped back. The majority of those I saw in it were women who, when entrusted, divulge secrets; when asked, they are relentless in asking—[my father said] Zakariyyā b. ʿAdī said: they are importunate—and when given, they are ungrateful. I also saw in it Luḥayy b. ʿAmr dragging his intestines, and the person I saw most resembling him is Maʿbad b. Aktham.” Maʿbad said, “O Messenger of Allah, should I fear from his resemblance, for he is a father?” He said, “No, you are a believer and he is a disbeliever. And he was the first to unite the Arabs on idol worship.”
