✧ He said regarding the Night of Decree: “Whoever stands in prayer the whole year will attain it.” So I set out until I came to Uthman b. Affan, and I wanted to meet the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ among the Muhajirun and the Ansar. Asim said: He narrated to me that he kept close to Ubayy b. Kaʿb and Abd al-Rahman b. Awf, and he claimed that the two of them used to stand when the sun set and pray two rakʿahs before Maghrib. He said: I said to Ubayy—and there was some roughness in him—“Lower your wing for us, may Allah have mercy on you, for I only wish to benefit from you.” He said: “You want not to leave any verse in the Quran without asking me about it!” He said: And he was a true friend to me, so I said: “O Abu al-Mundhir.”

machine translation"Tell me about Laylat al-Qadr, for Ibn Masʿūd says: Whoever stands in prayer throughout the year will catch it." He said: "By God, ʿAbdullāh knew that it is in Ramadan, but he kept it obscure from the people so that they would not rely on it. By God, who sent down the Book to Muḥammad, it is in Ramadan, and it is the night of the twenty-seventh." I said: "O Abū al-Mundhir, how did you know that?" He said: "By the sign that Muḥammad ﷺ informed us of. We counted and memorized, and by God, it is that night, without exception." He said: I said: "And what is the sign?" He said: "It is that the sun rises on its morning without any rays until it has risen high." And ʿĀṣim, on that night, from the pre-dawn, would not eat any food; then when he had prayed the Fajr he would climb up to the hermitage and look at the sun as it rose, with no rays, until it turned white and rose high.
