✧ I heard a man reciting, and I said: Who taught you to recite? He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ. I said: Let us go to him. So I went to the Prophet ﷺ and said: Ask this man to recite. He said: Recite. So he recited, and he said: You have done well. Then I said to him: Did you not teach me to recite such-and-such? He said: Yes, and you have also done well. So I gestured with my hands: You have said “you have done well” twice. He said: Then the Prophet ﷺ struck my chest with his hand and said: O God, remove doubt from Ubayy. I broke out in a sweat and my chest was filled with fear. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: O Ubayy, two angels came to me. One of them said: Recite upon one harf. The other said: Add to him. I said: Add to me. He said: Recite upon two huruf. The other said: Add to him. I said: Add to me. He said: Recite upon three. The other said: Add to him. I said: Add to me. He said: Recite upon four huruf. The other said: Add to him. I said: Add to me. He said: Recite upon five huruf. The other said: Add to him. I said: Add to me. He said: Recite upon six. The other said: Add to him. He said: Recite upon seven huruf. Thus the Quran was revealed upon seven huruf.
