machine translationḤajjāj is a concealer of defects in transmission (mudallis) and he was inconsistent (iḍṭaraba) in it. At times he narrated it in this way, and at times he narrated it with the addition of Shaddād b. Aws after the father of Abū al-Malīḥ; Ibn Abī Shaybah, Ibn Abī Ḥātim in al-ʿIlal, and al-Ṭabarānī in al-Kabīr recorded it. At other times he narrated it from Makḥūl from Abū Ayyūb; Aḥmad recorded it, and Ibn Abī Ḥātim mentioned it in al-ʿIlal and related from his father that it is an error, either from Ḥajjāj or from the narrator from him, ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. Ziyād. Al-Bayhaqī said: it is weak (ḍaʿīf) and disconnected (munqaṭiʿ). Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr said in al-Tamhīd: this hadith revolves around Ḥajjāj b. Arṭāh, and he is not one who is to be relied upon as evidence.
