حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ حَدَّثَنَا بِسْطَامُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ خَلِيفَةَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْغُبَرِيَّ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ عَائِذَ بْنَ عَمْرٍو الْمُزَنِيَّ قَالَ

بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ مَعَ نَبِيِّنَا ﷺ، إِذَا أَعْرَابِيٌّ قَدْ أَلَحَّ عَلَيْهِ فِي الْمَسْأَلَةِ يَقُولُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَطْعِمْنِي، يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَعْطِنِي، قَالَ: فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، فَدَخَلَ الْمَنْزِلَ وَأَخَذَ بِعِضَادَتَيِ الْحُجْرَةِ، وَأَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا بِوَجْهِهِ، وَقَالَ: وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ، لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ مَا أَعْلَمُ فِي الْمَسْأَلَةِ، مَا سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ رَجُلًا وَهُوَ يَجِدُ لَيْلَةً تُبِيتُهُ، فَأَمَرَ لَهُ بِطَعَامٍ

Translation

✧ While we were with our Prophet ﷺ, a bedouin kept urging him with requests, saying: "O Messenger of Allah, feed me; O Messenger of Allah, give me." He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up, entered the dwelling, and grasped the doorposts of the room. He turned his face toward us and said: "By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, if you knew what I know about asking, no man would ask another while he has a night's lodging to shelter him." Then he ordered that food be given to him.
