✧ I asked ʿAbd Allāh b. Mughaffal al-Muzanī: What drink has been forbidden to us? He said: Wine. He said: I said: This is in the Quran. He said: I will not tell you except what I heard Muḥammad the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, or the Messenger of Allah Muḥammad ﷺ. He said: Either he began with the messengership or he began with the name. Then I said: My way is that I am content. He said: He forbade al-ḥantam, which is the earthenware jar; and he forbade al-dubbāʾ, which is the gourd; and he forbade al-muzaffat, which is what is smeared with pitch, whether a skin or something else; and he forbade al-naqīr. He said: When I heard that, I bought a small tanned skin, and there it is hanging, in which nabīdh is made.
