✧ Go to Abu Barzah al-Aslami. So I went with him until we entered upon him in his house while he was sitting in the shade of an upper room made of reeds. We sat with him on a very hot day. My father asked him: Tell me how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray the prescribed prayers. He said: He used to pray the midday prayer, which you call the first, when the sun began to decline. He used to pray the afternoon prayer, then one of us would return to his riding place at the far end of Madinah while the sun was still bright. He said: And I forgot what he said about the sunset prayer. He said: He liked to delay the night prayer, which you call al-'atamah. He said: And he disliked sleeping before it and conversing after it. He said: And he used to finish the dawn prayer when one of us could recognize his sitting companion. And he used to recite between sixty and one hundred verses.

  • Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī

machine translationThe ḥadīth of Abū Barzah is more authentic (aṣaḥḥ) than the ḥadīth of Aws b. Ḥudhayfah, who said: "I was among the delegation of Thaqīf, and the Prophet ﷺ would come to us every night after the ʿishāʾ prayer and speak to us standing on his feet, until he shifted his weight from one foot to the other. Most of what he told us was what he had met with from his people, the Quraysh."
