حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ مُسْلِمٍ الْبَطِينِ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ

أَتَتِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ امْرَأَةٌ، فَقَالَتْ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّ أُمِّي مَاتَتْ وَعَلَيْهَا صَوْمُ شَهْرٍ، أَفَأَقْضِي عَنْهَا؟ قَالَ: فَقَالَ: أَرَأَيْتِ لَوْ كَانَ عَلَى أُمِّكِ دَيْنٌ أَمَا كُنْتِ تَقْضِينَهُ ؟ قَالَتْ: بَلَى. قَالَ: فَدَيْنُ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَحَقُّ

Translation

✧ A woman came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of Allah, my mother died owing a month of fasting. Should I make it up on her behalf?" He said: "Do you think if your mother had a debt, would you not pay it?" She said: "Yes." He said: "The debt owed to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, is more deserving of being paid."
