✧ I was among the delegation of those from Thaqīf, from Banū Mālik, who came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and submitted. He lodged us in a tent of his, and he would come to us between his houses and the mosque. When he prayed the later ʿishāʾ, he would come to us and not cease talking with us, complaining about Quraysh and complaining about the people of Makkah. Then he would say: "It is not equal; we were in Makkah humiliated and weak. When we left for Madinah, the fortunes of war were against us and for us." He stayed away from us one night and did not come to us until that became long for us after ʿishāʾ. He said: We said: "What kept you from us, O Messenger of God?" He said: "A portion of the Qurʾān came upon me, and I wanted not to leave until I had completed it." So we asked the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ when morning came. He said: We said: "How do you divide the Qurʾān into portions?" They said: "We divide it into six sūrahs, five sūrahs, seven sūrahs, nine sūrahs, eleven sūrahs, thirteen sūrahs, and the portion of the mufaṣṣal from Qāf until the end."
