machine translationThe hadith of Sufyān is more authentic than the hadith of Shuʿbah. Shuʿbah made mistakes in several places. He said "Ḥujr Abū al-ʿAnbas", but it is only Ḥujr b. al-ʿAnbas, whose kunyah is Abū al-Sakan. He added ʿAlqamah, but it is only Ḥujr from Abū Wāʾil. And he said "he lowered his voice with it", but it is only "he extended his voice with it".
in مسند أحمد, p. 19084 - Badr al-Dīn al-ʿAynī
machine translationTo declare a man like Shuʿbah mistaken is itself a mistake, and how could it not be, when he is the Commander of the Believers in ḥadīth. His statement that he is Ḥujr b. al-ʿAnbas and not Abū l-ʿAnbas is not as he said; rather he is Abū l-ʿAnbas Ḥujr b. al-ʿAnbas, and Ibn Ḥibbān asserted this in al-Thiqāt, saying: his kunyah is the same as his father's name. And the statement of Muḥammad that he is called Abū l-Sakan does not contradict his also having the kunyah Abū l-ʿAnbas, since nothing prevents a person from having two kunyahs. As for his statement that he added ʿAlqamah in it, this does no harm, because an addition from a trustworthy (thiqah) narrator is accepted, especially from one like Shuʿbah. And his statement that he said "and he lowered his voice with it", whereas it is rather "and he extended his voice with it".
in مسند أحمد, p. 19084 - Mubarakpūri
machine translationThere is no inconsistency (iḍṭirāb) in it; rather it is the preponderant report, in reply to the Ḥanafīs.
in مسند أحمد, p. 19084
