حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ حَدَّثَنَا فُضَيْلٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مَرْزُوقٍ عَنْ شَقِيقِ بْنِ عُقْبَةَعَنِ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ قَالَ
نَزَلَتْ ( حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَصَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ ) فَقَرَأْنَاهَا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مَا شَاءَ اللهُ أَنْ نَقْرَأَهَا، لَمْ يَنْسَخْهَا اللهُ فَأَنْزَلَ حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلاةِ الْوُسْطَى فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ كَانَ مَعَ شَقِيقٍ يُقَالُ لَهُ زَاهِرٌ: وَهِيَ صَلَاةُ الْعَصْرِ. قَالَ: قَدْ أَخْبَرْتُكَ كَيْفَ نَزَلَتْ، وَكَيْفَ نَسَخَهَا اللهُ، وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ
Translation

✧ The verse 'Guard strictly the prayers and the mid-afternoon prayer' was revealed, and we recited it during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as long as Allah willed us to recite it; Allah did not abrogate it, and so He revealed: 'Guard strictly the prayers and the middle prayer.' A man who was with Shaqiq, named Zahir, said to him: "And it is the mid-afternoon prayer." He said: "I have informed you how it was revealed and how Allah abrogated it, and Allah knows best."
