✧ I was sitting with ‘Abd Allāh and Abū Mūsā. Abū Mūsā said, “O Abū ‘Abd al-Raḥmān, a man becomes ritually impure and finds no water—should he pray?” He said, “No.” He said, “Have you not heard ‘Ammār’s statement to ‘Umar: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me and you, and I became ritually impure and rolled in the clean earth. We came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him, and he said, ‘It would have sufficed you to do this,’ and he wiped his face and palms once.” He said, “I have not seen ‘Umar accept that.” He said, “Then what do you do with this verse: {But if you do not find water, then perform tayammum with clean earth}?” He said, “If we gave them a concession in this, when one of them found cold water he would wipe himself with clean earth.” Al-A‘mash said: I said to Shaqīq, “He disliked it only for this.”
