✧ I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of God, write for me [a grant of] such-and-such land'—land in Syria which the Prophet ﷺ had not yet conquered at that time. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Will you not listen to what this man says?' Abū Thaʿlabah said: 'By the One in whose hand is my soul, you will certainly conquer it.' So he wrote it for him. I said to him: 'O Messenger of God, our land is a land of game. I send out my trained dog and my untrained dog?' He said: 'When you send out your trained dog and mention God's name, eat what your trained dog holds for you, even if it kills. If you send out your untrained dog and catch it alive, then eat, and eat what your arrow returns to you, even if it kills, and mention God's name.' I said: 'O Prophet of God, our land is a land of the People of the Book. They eat pork and drink wine. What should we do with their vessels and cooking pots?' He said: 'If you find nothing else, wash them and cook in them and drink.' I said: 'O Messenger of God, what is lawful for us from what is forbidden to us?' He said: 'Do not eat the meat of domestic donkeys, nor any fanged beast of prey.'
