حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ نَوْفَلٍ عَنْ عَبَّاسِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ قَالَ

قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، هَلْ نَفَعْتَ أَبَا طَالِبٍ بِشَيْءٍ؟ فَإِنَّهُ كَانَ يَحُوطُكَ، وَيَغْضَبُ لَكَ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، هُوَ فِي ضَحْضَاحٍ مِنَ النَّارِ، وَلَوْلَا ذَلِكَ لَكَانَ فِي الدَّرْكِ الْأَسْفَلِ مِنَ النَّارِ

Translation

✧ I said: O Messenger of Allah, did you benefit Abu Talib in any way? For he used to protect you and become angry for you. He said: Yes, he is in a shallow part of the Fire, and were it not for that, he would have been in the lowest depths of the Fire.
