ʿUqbah b. ʿĀmir al-Juhanī from the Prophet ﷺ

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَي بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ عَنْ كَعْبِ بْنِ عَلْقَمَةَ حَدَّثَنِي مَوْلًى لِعُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِعُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ

إِنَّ لَنَا جِيرَانًا يَشْرَبُونَ الْخَمْرَ ؟ قَالَ: اسْتُرْ عَلَيْهِمْ. قَالَ: مَا أَسْتُرُ عَلَيْهِمْ ! أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَذْهَبَ أَجِيءَ بِالشُّرَطِ عَلَيْهِمْ. قَالَ: فَقَالَ لَهُ عُقْبَةُ: وَيْحَكَ، مَهْلًا عَلَيْهِمْ، سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: مَنْ رَأَى عَوْرَةً فَسَتَرَهَا، كَانَ كَمَنِ اسْتَحْيَا مَوْءُودَةً مِنْ قَبْرِهَا

Translation

✧ 'We have neighbors who drink wine.' He said: 'Conceal them.' He said: 'How can I conceal them? I want to go and bring the police upon them.' He said: Then ʿUqbah said to him: 'Woe to you! Be gentle with them. I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: "Whoever sees a private fault and conceals it is like one who revives a buried infant girl from her grave."'
