حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ الْمُبَارَكِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ عِمْرَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ مُلَيْلٍ السَّلِيحِيُّ وَهُمْ إِلَى قُضَاعَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي قَالَكُنْتُ مَعَ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ جَالِسًا قَرِيبًا مِنَ الْمِنْبَرِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ فَخَرَجَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي حُذَيْفَةَ فَاسْتَوَى عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُورَةً مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ قَالَ وَكَانَ مِنْ أَقْرَإِ النَّاسِ قَالَ فَقَالَ

كُنْتُ مَعَ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ جَالِسًا قَرِيبًا مِنَ الْمِنْبَرِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ، فَخَرَجَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي حُذَيْفَةَ، فَاسْتَوَى عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ، ثُمَّ قَرَأَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُورَةً مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ، قَالَ: وَكَانَ مِنْ أَقْرَإِ النَّاسِ، قَالَ: فَقَالَ عُقْبَةُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ: صَدَقَ اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ، إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: لَيَقْرَأَنَّ الْقُرْآنَ رِجَالٌ لَا يُجَاوِزُ تَرَاقِيَهُمْ، يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ

✧ I was sitting with ʿUqbah b. ʿĀmir near the pulpit on Friday, when Muhammad b. Abī Ḥudhayfah came out and ascended the pulpit. He gave a sermon to the people, then recited a surah from the Qur'an to them. He was one of the best reciters of the people. ʿUqbah b. ʿĀmir said: 'Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Men will recite the Qur'an, but it will not go past their collarbones. They will pass out of the religion as the arrow passes through the game.'
