✧ We were with Umar b. Abd al-Aziz, and he once delayed the Asr prayer. Urwah b. al-Zubayr said to him: Bashir b. Abi Masud al-Ansari narrated to me that al-Mughirah b. Shubah delayed the prayer once—meaning Asr—and Abu Masud said to him: By Allah, O Mughirah, I know that Jibril ﷺ descended and prayed, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed, and the people prayed with him. Then he descended and prayed, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed, and the people prayed with him, until he counted five prayers. Umar said to him: Consider what you say, O Urwah—was it Jibril who instituted the prayer? Urwah said: Thus Bashir b. Abi Masud narrated to me. And Umar kept learning the time of prayer by a sign until he departed this world.
