✧ I was working in al-Daynabadh, tending it. Then Ya'la b. Umayya came as governor over Yemen, and with him came men from the companions of the Prophet ﷺ. A man from those who came with him came to me while I was in the field directing water into the crops, and in his sleeve he had walnuts. He sat by a water channel, breaking those walnuts and eating them. Then he gestured to Fannaj and said: “O Persian, come here.” He said: So I approached him, and the man said to Fannaj: “Will you guarantee for me the planting of these walnuts on this water?” Fannaj said to him: “What benefit is that to me?” The man said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say with these two ears of mine: ‘Whoever plants a tree and patiently tends it and cares for it until it bears fruit, he will have for everything that is taken from its fruit a charity with Allah, Mighty and Majestic.’” Fannaj said to him: “Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?” He said: “Yes.” Fannaj said: “Then I will guarantee it.” He said: So from that came the walnuts of al-Daynabadh.
