✧ Four verses were revealed concerning me on the day of Badr. I had taken a sword, so I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'O Messenger of God, grant it to me as booty.' He said, 'Put it down.' Then I stood and said, 'O Messenger of God, grant it to me as booty.' He said, 'Put it down.' Then I stood and said, 'O Messenger of God, grant it to me as booty. Am I to be treated like one who has no use?' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Put it back from where you took it.' Then this verse was revealed: 'They ask you about the spoils of war. Say: The spoils belong to God and the Messenger' [Q 8:1]. He said: A man of the Ansar prepared food and invited us, and we drank wine until we became intoxicated. Then the Ansar and Quraysh boasted to one another. The Ansar said, 'We are better than you,' and Quraysh said, 'We are better than you.' A man from the Ansar took the jawbones of a slaughtered camel and struck Sa'd's nose with them, splitting it. So Sa'd's nose was split. Then this verse was revealed: 'O you who believe, wine, gambling, sacrificial stones, and divining arrows are only defilement from Satan's work, so avoid them that you may succeed' [Q 5:90]. He said: Sa'd's mother said, 'Has not God commanded them to be dutiful? By God, I will not eat food or drink drink until I die or you disbelieve in Muhammad.' So when they wanted to feed her, they pried open her mouth with a stick and then poured it in. Then this verse was revealed: 'And We have enjoined upon man goodness to his parents' [Q 29:8]. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ entered upon Sa'd while he was ill, visiting him, and Sa'd said, 'O Messenger of God, should I bequeath all my wealth?' He said, 'No.' He said, 'Then two-thirds?' He said, 'No.' He said, 'Then one-third?' He said, and then he fell silent.

machine translationHe was asked about the hadith of Muṣʿab b. Saʿd, from his father, who said: Umm Saʿd said: "Food and drink are forbidden to me until you disbelieve in Muḥammad," so Allah the Exalted revealed {وَإِن جَاهَدَاكَ} (the verse). He said: Simāk b. Ḥarb narrates it. Shuʿbah, al-Thawrī and Abū ʿAwānah narrated it from him, from Muṣʿab b. Saʿd, from Saʿd. Dāwūd b. Abī Hind transmitted it as a mursal report from him, saying: from Simāk b. Ḥarb, who said: Saʿd said, without mentioning Muṣʿab between them. And it is authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) from Muṣʿab b. Saʿd with a connected chain (muttaṣil).
