✧ We were sitting on a rooftop with a man from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ—Yazid said: I think he was none other than ʿAbs al-Ghifārī—while people were going out during the plague. ʿAbs said: “O plague, take me!” three times. ʿUlaym said to him: “Why do you say this? Did the Messenger of God ﷺ not say: ‘None of you should wish for death, for at that point his deeds are cut off, and he is not returned to be asked to repent’?” He replied: “I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: ‘Hasten to meet death for six reasons: the rule of fools, the abundance of police, the selling of judgment, contempt for blood, severing family ties, and a generation who treat the Qurʾān as musical instruments, putting forward a singer to lead them in it even if he is less knowledgeable than them.’”
