✧ Four verses were revealed concerning my father. He said: My father said: I acquired a sword. I said: O Messenger of Allah, give it to me as a gift? He said: Put it down. I said: O Messenger of Allah, give it to me as a gift; would I be made like one who has no use? He said: Put it back where you took it. Then it was revealed: 'They ask you about the spoils of war' [al-Anfal 8:1]. He said: And in the recitation of Ibn Mas'ud it is like that: 'Say: The spoils of war.' My mother said: Does not Allah command you to maintain ties of kinship and to be dutiful to parents? By Allah, I will not eat food or drink drink until you disbelieve in Muhammad. She would not eat until they pried her mouth open with a stick and poured drink into it. Shu'ba said: I think he said: and food. Then it was revealed: 'And We have enjoined upon man care for his parents. His mother carried him with hardship upon hardship' [Luqman 31:14], and he recited until he reached: 'for what you used to do' [al-'Ankabut 29:8]. The Prophet ﷺ entered upon me while I was sick. I said: O Messenger of Allah, shall I bequeath all my wealth? He forbade me. I said: half? He said: No. I said: a third? He remained silent, so people adopted that. A man from the Ansar prepared food, and they ate and drank and became intoxicated from wine, and that was before it was forbidden. We gathered with him and boasted. The Ansar said: The Ansar are better, and the Muhajirun said: The Muhajirun are better. A man struck him with the jawbone of a camel, and split his nose, and Sa'd's nose was split. Then it was revealed: 'O you who have believed, indeed wine and gambling...' up to His saying: 'So will you desist?' [al-Ma'idah 5:90-91].
