✧ Mu'adh used to pray with the Messenger of God ﷺ, then return and lead his people in prayer. He said: One time when he led them in 'Isha' prayer, he recited Surah al-Baqarah. A man went off and left. Mu'adh found fault with him about that. That reached the Prophet ﷺ, and he said: "A trial, a trial, [a trial]" or he said: "A tempter, a tempter, a tempter." He commanded him to recite two surahs from the middle of the mufassal. 'Amr said: I do not remember them.

machine translationHe was asked about the ḥadīth of Jābir b. ʿAbdullāh from Muʿādh, that he used to pray with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and then leave and lead his people in that same prayer. He said: ʿAmr b. Dīnār narrates it, and there is disagreement about it from him. Al-Ḥasan b. Abī Jaʿfar narrated it from Ayyūb from ʿAmr from Jābir from Muʿādh, and Muḥammad b. Yazīd al-Wāsiṭī followed him, narrating it from Shuʿbah from ʿAmr from Jābir from Muʿādh. But the students of Shuʿbah and the students of Ayyūb contradicted them both, narrating it from them from ʿAmr from Jābir that Muʿādh [did so]. Likewise Manṣūr b. Zādhān, Warqāʾ and Muḥammad b. Muslim narrated it. The sound (ṣaḥīḥ) version is that it belongs to the musnad of Jābir.
