Notes
machine translation"Tell me about the ʿumrah: is it obligatory?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "No, but to perform ʿumrah is better for you."

What scholars said about it
In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.
- Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī
machine translationAnd al-Ḥajjāj is weak (ḍaʿīf).
in مسند أحمد, p. 14552 - Ibn Ḥazm
machine translationIt is a fabricated (makdhūb), false (bāṭil) report.
in مسند أحمد, p. 14552 - Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr
machine translationWhat al-Ḥajjāj b. Arṭāh alone narrates is not proof.
in مسند أحمد, p. 14552 - Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr
machine translationThis is not proof according to the scholars of hadith, because al-Ḥajjāj is alone in it, and what he alone narrates is not proof according to them. Then he mentioned a hadith and said: This hadith, according to them, is more sound than the hadith of al-Ḥajjāj b. Arṭāh, meaning our hadith.

machine translationThere is room for objection in his declaring it sound (ṣaḥīḥ), for the two Shaykhs did not use al-Ḥajjāj as proof in their Ṣaḥīḥs. Ibn Ḥibbān said: Ibn al-Mubārak, Yaḥyā b. al-Qaṭṭān, Ibn Mahdī, Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn and Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal abandoned him.
in مسند أحمد, p. 14552 - Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī
machine translationAl-Ḥajjāj b. Arṭāh raised it to the Prophet (marfūʿ), and he is weak (ḍaʿīf).
machine translationIt does not fall below the rank of good (ḥasan). Even though al-Ḥajjāj b. Arṭāh, of whom al-Dāraquṭnī said "he is not used as proof", is in the chain, Ibn Jurayj corroborated him from Ibn al-Munkadir from Jābir.
machine translationIts transmission revolves around al-Ḥajjāj b. Arṭāh, Abū Arṭāh al-Nakhaʿī al-Kūfī, whose condition you already know from the twenty-ninth hadith of the chapter on the adhān. What I did not mention there is that Muslim narrated from him coupled with another, and Ibn Ḥibbān narrated from him in his Ṣaḥīḥ. Al-Khaṭīb described him as one of the memorizers (ḥuffāẓ). Al-ʿIjlī said: He was a jurist, one of the muftis of the people of Kūfah, and he had some arrogance; he used to say: "The love of status has destroyed me." He was appointed judge of Basra. His hadith was acceptable (jāʾiz), except that he often narrated with omission of links (irsāl), and people criticize him mainly for concealment (tadlīs). Ibn Ḥibbān said: Ibn al-Mubārak, Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān, Ibn Mahdī, Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn and Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal abandoned him, and Zāʾidah used to order that his hadith be left. Aḥmad said: He adds to hadiths and narrates from those he did not meet; he is not used as proof. Abū Ṭālib reported from Aḥmad: He was one of the memorizers.
in مسند أحمد, p. 14552 - Ibn Ḥazm

machine translationThis hadith is false (bāṭil); al-Ḥajjāj is discarded (sāqiṭ).

machine translationThis hadith was narrated by Ḥajjāj b. Arṭāh as raised to the Prophet (marfūʿ), but what is preserved (maḥfūẓ) is only from Jābir as his own statement (mawqūf), not raised. He said: It has also been narrated from Jābir as raised, contrary to that. He said: Both are weak (ḍaʿīf).
