✧ We said to al-Zubayr: O Abū ʿAbd Allāh, what has brought you? You neglected the caliph until he was killed, then you came seeking his blood. Al-Zubayr said: We recited it during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, and ʿUthmān: 'And fear a trial which will not afflict those among you who did wrong exclusively.' We did not think we were its people, until it befell us where it befell us.

machine translationRuwaym b. Yazīd al-Muqriʾ was alone in transmitting it from Sallām b. Sulaymān al-Qāriʾ, from Yūnus, from al-Ḥasan, from Abū Salīṭ, from al-Zubayr. The companions of Yūnus contradicted him and said: from al-Ḥasan, from al-Zubayr. Likewise it was narrated by Dāwūd b. Abī Hind, ʿAlī b. Zayd and Mubārak b. Faḍālah, from al-Ḥasan, from al-Zubayr, and this is the preserved (maḥfūẓ) version. And Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl al-Wasāwisī narrated it from Isḥāq al-Azraq, from Dāwūd, from al-Ḥasan, from ʿAwn b. Qatādah, from al-Zubayr.
