Translation

✧ I was brought al-Buraq, a white beast larger than a donkey and smaller than a mule, which placed its hoof at the limit of its gaze. I mounted it and it carried me until I came to Jerusalem. I tied the beast to the ring to which the prophets tied it, then I entered and prayed two rak'ahs in it, then I came out. Jibril ﷺ came to me with a vessel of wine and a vessel of milk, and I chose the milk. Jibril said: You have chosen the natural disposition. He said: Then he ascended with us to the lowest heaven. Jibril asked for the gate to be opened, and it was said: Who are you? He said: Jibril. It was said: And who is with you? He said: Muhammad. It was said: Has he been sent for? He said: He has been sent for. So it was opened for us, and there I was with Adam. He welcomed me and prayed for good for me. Then he ascended with us to the second heaven. Jibril asked for the gate to be opened, and it was said: Who are you? He said: Jibril. It was said: And who is with you? He said: Muhammad. It was said: Has he been sent for? He said: He has been sent for. He said: So it was opened for us, and there I was with the two maternal cousins, Yahya and 'Isa. They welcomed me and prayed for good for me. Then he ascended with us to the third heaven. Jibril asked for the gate to be opened, and it was said: Who are you? He said: Jibril. It was said: And who is with you? He said: Muhammad. It was said: Has he been sent for? He said: He has been sent for. So it was opened for us, and there I was with Yusuf ﷺ, and he had been given half of all beauty. He welcomed me and prayed for good for me. Then he ascended with us to the fourth heaven. Jibril asked for the gate to be opened, and it was said: Who are you? He said: Jibril. It was said: And who is with you? He said: Muhammad. It was said: Has he been sent for? He said: He has been sent for. So the gate was opened, and there I was with Idris. He welcomed me and prayed for good for me. Then he said: Allah (Mighty and Majestic) says: "And We raised him to a high station." Then he ascended with us to the fifth heaven. Jibril asked for the gate to be opened, and it was said: Who are you? He said: Jibril. It was said: And who is with you? He said: Muhammad. It was said: Has he been sent for? He said: He has been sent for. So it was opened for us, and there I was with Harun. He welcomed me and prayed for good for me. Then he ascended with us to the sixth heaven. Jibril asked for the gate to be opened, and it was said: Who are you? He said: Jibril. It was said: And who is with you? He said: Muhammad. It was said: Has he been sent for? He said: He has been sent for. So it was opened for us, and there I was with Musa ﷺ. He welcomed me and prayed for good for me. Then he ascended with us to the seventh heaven. Jibril asked for the gate to be opened, and it was said: Who are you? He said: Jibril. It was said: And who is with you? He said: Muhammad. It was said: Has he been sent for? He said: He has been sent for. So it was opened for us, and there I was with Ibrahim ﷺ, leaning against the Much-Frequented House, into which seventy thousand angels enter every day and do not return to it. Then he took me to the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary. Its leaves were like the ears of elephants, and its fruit was like large jars. When it was covered by the command of Allah as it was covered, it changed, and no one of Allah's creation could describe its beauty. He said: Then Allah (Mighty and Majestic) revealed to me what He revealed, and imposed upon me fifty prayers every day and night. I descended until I came to Musa, and he said: What has your Lord imposed upon your community? I said: Fifty prayers every day and night. He said: Return to your Lord and ask Him for reduction, for your community will not be able to bear that. I have tested the Children of Israel and know them. He said: So I returned to my Lord (Mighty and Majestic) and said: O Lord, lighten the burden on my community. So He reduced five from me. I returned to Musa, and he said: What did you do? I said: He reduced five from me. He said: Your community will not be able to bear that, so return to your Lord and ask Him for reduction for your community. He said: I kept going back between my Lord and Musa, and He reduced five by five, until He said: O Muhammad, they are five prayers every day and night; for each prayer there are ten, so that is fifty prayers. And whoever intends a good deed but does not do it, a good deed is written for him; if he does it, ten are written. And whoever intends an evil deed but does not do it, nothing is written; if he does it, one evil deed is written. I descended until I came to Musa and told him, and he said: Return to your Lord and ask Him for reduction for your community, for your community will not be able to bear that. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I returned to my Lord until I felt ashamed.
