حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَوْنِ بْنِ أَبِي جُحَيْفَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ قَالَ عَلِيٌّ
إِذَا حَدَّثْتُكُمْ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ حَدِيثًا، فَلَأَنْ أَقَعَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أَقُولَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مَا لَمْ يَقُلْ، وَلَكِنَّ الْحَرْبَ خَدْعَةٌ

ʿAli ؓ said: If I narrate to you a hadeeth from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then being thrown from heaven to earth is dearer to me than attributing to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ something that he did not say However, war is deceit.
