Translation

✧ Delegations came to Muʿāwiyah, and I was among them, along with Abū Hurayrah, during Ramaḍān. Some of us began preparing food for others. He said: Abū Hurayrah used to invite us often. Hāshim said: He used to invite us often to his camp. He said: So I said: Shall I prepare food and invite them to my camp? He said: So I ordered food to be prepared, and I met Abū Hurayrah after the evening prayer. He said: I said: O Abū Hurayrah, the invitation is with me tonight. He said: Have you preceded me? Hāshim said: I said: Yes. He said: So I invited them, and they were with me. Abū Hurayrah said: Shall I inform you of a report from your reports, O company of the Anṣār? He said: Then he mentioned the conquest of Makkah. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and entered Makkah. He said: He sent al-Zubayr on one of the two flanks, and he sent Khālid on the other flank, and he sent Abū ʿUbaydah on the unarmored troops, and they took the bottom of the valley while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in his battalion. He said: Quraysh had gathered their rabble. He said: They said: We will send these forward; if they gain something, we will be with them, and if they are struck, we will give what is asked of us. He said: Abū Hurayrah said: He looked and saw me, and said: O Abū Hurayrah. I said: At your service, Messenger of Allah. He said: He said: Call the Anṣār to me, and let no one come to me except an Anṣārī. So I called them, and they came and surrounded the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Do you see the rabble of Quraysh and their followers? Then he said with his hands, one over the other: Mow them down completely until you meet me at al-Ṣafā. He said: Abū Hurayrah said: So we set out, and none of us wished to kill any of them but he could kill as many as he wished, and none of them directed anything at us. He said: Abū Sufyān said: O Messenger of Allah, the green of Quraysh has been made lawful; there will be no Quraysh after today. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Whoever closes his door is safe, and whoever enters the house of Abū Sufyān is safe. He said: So the people closed their doors. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to the Stone and touched it, then circumambulated the House. He said: In his hand was a bow, holding the end of the bow. He said: During his circumambulation he came upon an idol beside the House that they used to worship. He said: He began poking it in its eye with it, saying: Truth has come and falsehood has vanished. He said: Then he came to al-Ṣafā and climbed it to where he could see the House, raised his hands and began remembering Allah as much as He willed and supplicating Him. He said: The Anṣār were below him. He said: Some of them said to others: As for the man, desire for his town and compassion for his clan have overtaken him. Abū Hurayrah said: And revelation came, and when it came it was not hidden from us, for none of the people would lift his gaze to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until it finished. Hāshim said: When the revelation finished, he raised his head and said: O company of the Anṣār, did you say: As for the man, desire for his town and compassion for his clan have overtaken him? They said: We said that, O Messenger of Allah. He said: Then what is my name? No indeed; I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger. I migrated to Allah and to you; the living is your living, and the dying is your dying. He said: They came to him weeping, saying: By Allah, we did not say what we said except out of reluctance to part with Allah and His Messenger. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah and His Messenger believe you and excuse you.
