✧ I was the cupbearer of the people in the house of Abu Talhah on the day wine was forbidden. Their drink that day was fadikh—unripe and ripe dates. Among them were men from the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ. A caller called out and said to me: Go out and look. I went out, and there was a caller announcing: Wine has been forbidden. He said: And there it was, flowing in the streets of Madinah. I came and informed Abu Talhah. He said: Go out and spill it. Some of the people said: So-and-so and so-and-so were killed while it was in their bellies. Then God sent down: There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they have eaten—the verse.
