✧ The Slaughter of the People of the Book

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا الثَّوْرِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِي الْعَلَاءِ بُرْدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ، عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ نُسَيٍّ، عَنْ غُطَيْفِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ قَالَ:
كَتَبَ عَامِلٌ إِلَى عُمَرَ أَنَّ قِبَلَنَا نَاسًا يُدْعَوْنَ السَّامِرَةَ يَقْرَءُونَ التَّوْارَةَ، وَيَسْبِتُونَ السَّبْتَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْبَعْثِ، فَمَا يَرَى أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي ذَبَائِحِهِمْ، فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ عُمَرُ إِنَّهُمْ طَائِفَةٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ، ذَبَائِحُهُمْ ذَبَائِحُ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ
Translation
✧ An official wrote to ʿUmar that there are people near us called the Samaritans who read the Torah, observe the Sabbath, and do not believe in the resurrection. What does the Commander of the Faithful think about their slaughter? ʿUmar wrote to him: "They are a sect of the People of the Book; their slaughter is the slaughter of the People of the Book."
