✧ The prostration incumbent on one who hears it

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ:

قُلْتُ لِعَطَاءٍ: السُّجُودُ وَاجِبٌ ؟ قَالَ: لَا، بَلَغَنِي أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ بَيْنَا هُوَ يَقْرَأُ سُورَةً فِيهَا سَجْدَةٌ فَسَجَدَ مَنْ حَوْلَهُ، فَقَالَ: " لَوْلَا أَنَّكُمْ سَجَدْتُمْ مَا سَجَدْتُ، وَلَيْسَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ

Translation

✧ I said to Ata: Is prostration obligatory? He said: No. It has reached me that Umar b. al-Khattab, while he was reciting a surah containing a prostration and those around him prostrated, said: “Had you not prostrated, I would not have prostrated, and it is not in the prayer.”
