That a man from Muzaynah asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of Allah, what of a stray sheep?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Take it, for it is either for you, or for your brother, or for the wolf; so take it until its seeker comes." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, and a stray camel?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "It has its water-skin and its hooves with it, it eats from the land, and the wolf is not feared for it; so leave it until its seeker comes." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, and what of property that is found?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whatever is found on a frequented road, or in an inhabited village, announce it for a year. If its seeker comes, return it to him, and if you do not find a seeker, it is yours. If a seeker comes at any time, return it to him." He said: "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and what is found in a ruined village?" He said: "In it and in buried treasure (rikāz) is the fifth." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, what of the sheep taken from the mountain pasture?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "For it there is its compensation, and the like of it with it, and lashes of deterrent punishment." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, and the fruit hanging on the tree?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Its compensation and the like of it with it, and lashes of deterrent punishment." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, and what of the penalty for taking from the threshing floor and the animal pen?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If it reaches the price of a shield, the hand of its taker is cut off. The price of a shield was ten dirhams. What is less than that, its compensation and the like of it, and lashes of deterrent punishment." And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Pardon one another among yourselves before you bring it to me, for whatever reaches me of a prescribed punishment (ḥadd) has become obligatory."
